![]() ![]() She only appears in the last novel but she is a carefully drawn, very humorous character that's as likable as many of the great characters in the novel genre. ![]() I can't help mentioning one other character: Birdie. This was hammered into my head a good many times when I was an English major in college and I have always found it so. Good fiction is all about having good characters. I've rekilted it four or five times so obviously I think very highly of the character development. The Wilderness series is a big favorite of mine and I look forward to reading the views of other OBC members about the characters. Donati does a good job with POV as otherwise her characters wouldn't be as strong as they are. I think a big part of the attractiveness of any novel is the ability to build strong characters who the reader gets to know personally. I don't mean to disparage the characterizations of Elizabeth, Nathaniel, Hannah and others. First person POV traditionally creates more highly personalized characters than third party narration. I think this is because the reader is better able to invest in a character like Claire as she's the main narrator. Donati also has strong characters, just not as good as DG's. I credit this in part to DG's choice of point of view which seems to help her in character building. I don't think Elizabeth and Nathaniel are as well developed as characters as Claire and Jamie. I think she's particularly likable because she's an especially strong character who overcomes prejudices against her because she's half Native American, but aside from this she's a strongly drawn character in her own right. I too rank her right up there with Elizabeth and Nathaniel in importance. Her role in the novels is very important to the success of the series. I'm glad you indicate that Hannah is a main character. Please comment on this engaging couple and their forbidden romance, as well as on their fearless children. She becomes a learned doctor in her own right and faces adventures of her own in the later books. Hannah Bonner is half Kahnyenkehaka (Mohawk) and a product of Nathaniel's first marriage to Sings-from-Books. She is step-mother to Hannah and Luke Bonner and mother to twins Daniel and Lily, and singletons Gabriel and Birdie. ![]() After a brief courtship, she secretly marries Nathaniel and ends up in an adventure of a lifetime. He is a handsome, rugged-looking man who possess both Native American and English blood.Įlizabeth Middleton is a 29-year old spinster striving for independence who comes to Paradise, NY with the hopes of starting a school for the children in Paradise. All Books in the Wilderness Series are open for discussion.Īs there are several members here who enjoy the Wilderness series and are interested in discussing the main characters, I am starting this topic that deals with the Bonners.įor starters, there is Nathaniel Bonner, Hawkeye and Cora's son, who is know as "Between Two Lives" by the Mohawk. ![]()
